Togander Pelisch II

An extraordinary coincidence.

This duo has very little history: In 2024, an album was released in Barcelona, the result of the first and only time these two people ever got together to improvise.

A year later, in Buenos Aires, without any plan and without having met beforehand, they released another album (this one) with their second live concert.

And so, they await another unforeseen circumstance that will bring them together again for their inevitable third album.

Tal vez no haga falta decidirlo. Virtuosismo.

There are duos that come together to make music. Others, to see how long it takes for a musical form to break down. Bárbara Togander and Valentín Pelisch seem to belong to this second group, those who approach sound not like someone entering an orderly room, but like someone opening the wrong door and deciding to stay put anyway.

This recording brings together a show and its soundcheck. That decision alone speaks volumes. There’s no sharp separation here between the work and its prelude, between the concert and its preparations, between what’s “cooked” and what’s still finding its footing. The fine-tuning doesn’t appear as an auxiliary document, but as part of the same organism: an open laboratory, a zone where the materials “test the waters” but know clearly what game they’re playing.

Pelisch and Togander work with an energy that’s hard to classify. There’s something theatrical, something electroacoustic, something of a badly tuned radio, and a lot of a creature trying to learn a language. The voices speak while chewing over language and its semantics, becoming pure gesture on the verge of distortion. The sounds enter like found objects. Some seem to have a function, others simply pass through with the absurd dignity of those who owe no explanations. Their appearance even elicits a smile or two.

We could describe this music, without fear or reverence, as a kind of “contemporary Dadaism.” It cultivates that attitude. It disarms solemnity, distrusts good taste, and lets absurdity produce its own logic. To the unsuspecting listener, I would say that in this hodgepodge, meaning doesn’t disappear, but it behaves in a deliciously strange way. It operates through accumulation, through clash, through deviation, through a shared belief that error can also be a way of hitting the mark.

On a more human level, we are witnessing the recording of a complicity. Two artists assemble a rickety machine and set it running until it begins to speak for itself. We don’t quite know if the result is a series of unhinged songs, a scene, a conversation, an accident, or an intimate ceremony. Perhaps there’s no need to decide. It’s enough to stay there, on that ledge where the sound hasn’t quite decided what it wants to be, but the music retains its capacity to surprise. Virtuosity.
